My TV didn’t even label it on the remote properly (as well as putting it with a cluster of unrelated buttons), so I had to dig out the manual. I suppose that family you knew, like me, either didn’t find the aspect ratio settings or didn’t know about them. In my case, I realised a chunk of my Xbox’s picture was missing off the screen in some games and realised that I’d never set the ratio properly for my consoles (whoops). The addition of modes like cinema/gaming/etc to monitors and TVs over the years were a godsend as well. I was very happy to get a monitor that came with nice colours out of the box, instead of fussing around with calibration. I always used to wonder if it was a matter of poor quality screens, but your explanation would make sense if it was a deliberate choice on Wacom’s part. I noticed that with an old Cintiq, that had very very high saturation for what I’d expect from an industry where accurate colours is king. There were a lot of instances in combat in which I was grateful I could use my sniper rifle to pick off enemies at my leisure rather than get shot-up trying to close that distance to finish them off. In the first mission on Eden Prime I’m given a sniper rifle - a weapon old vanguards could not effectively use. Now Shepard can use any weapon, no prerequisites required, and that skill comes in handy. Your reticle was just a comically wide circle in the middle of the screen, and even if your target was dead centre of that circle it was still a 50/50 chance you would hit it. I already love love the removal of restrictions on weapons: Before, if you were a class trying to use a weapon for which you had no training, the game - in its abundant generosity - would let you fire it but good luck hitting anything. I remember combat in the original Mass Effect as being sometimes overly difficult, and I was eager to see how BioWare’s improvements might make a difference in Legendary Edition. She looks exactly like she did way back in 2007. (She looks far more normal on my computer monitor, but still a little reddish.) I moved my Xbox to a different TV, toyed with the settings, and played during the daytime to see if it was just me but no, homegirl is just red. There’s one that’s very red-looking, like Commander-Shepard-is-secretly-a-tiefling red. ![]() Also, some of the darker skin tones look really weird on my TV. I understand Commander Shepard is a military woman and therefore can’t run around the galaxy in bantu knots (imagine trying to get those under a helmet), but an awkward-looking high top fade and five piddly cornrows just ain’t doing it for me. The enhanced character creator underwhelmed me, especially since I was hoping for a few more kinkier hair options. In a blog post leading up to the game’s release, BioWare said, “Customisation options and character appearances have also been improved with updated textures and hair models.” This news was especially appealing to me because BioWare has a history of disappointing me with character creators that fail to properly account for diverse skin and hair options. The first major difference I noticed was the character creator. ![]() From what I’ve seen so far, the changes are welcome additions that make a great game even better. They aren’t light, but they are good value, costing almost half of what a lightweight race 29er tyre does. With a good volume, an open tread pattern and a reliable sidewall, I can recommend them for anywhere but areas that experience a lot of heavy mud, or somewhere with lots of gravel, or similar trail surface. I can only assume they stretched in a little over time. Tight enough to reach for a tyre lever for the last part, but otherwise highly manageable. There was no drama at all, and they fitted up just like any other tyre. ![]() I was really happy riding these tyres, and it was only towards the end of the test period that I figured I should drop the pressure out and see how they were to remove and refit. The rear was showing signs of use, and was close to needing replacing after three months of fairly frequent use. This lessened with lower tyre pressures, but they weren’t as confidence inspiring as other tyres I have used. I’m not amazing either on high speed gravel descents, but they did skate around more than I expected. I didn’t mange to flat them in three months of use, even in rocky terrain. On rough surfaces though, they were strong. Their round profile and prominent edge knobs grip well, although they didn’t roll exceptionally fast on hard surfaces. But in dry conditions they were a predictable tyre. But clay based mud often is thick unless there is still a lot of water around, and the Michelin’s quickly packed up, mostly on the shoulders. When it wasn’t too thick the fairly open centre tread did clear it well. Most of the mud that I encountered was clay based. While the volume of the tyre and a corresponding low pressure was great in sand, I did see wet conditions when testing as well. but it was disconcerting if I ran them any lower. Clearly this was the bag, and not the bead coming away. They still didn’t burp, but they did not feel consistent when cornering as the tyre seemed to ‘roll’ around on the rim. In fact, running much lower they felt very ‘squirmy’. The Michelin tyres don’t have the same feeling at lower pressures given they don’t have such a reinforced sidewall. This is about 2.5 psi higher than I run in the Maxxis IKON Exo tyres. I used these tyres at the Kona Odyssey, and run at suitably low pressures (24psi front, 26psi in the back) they floated quite well. This didn’t cause any troubles with clearance – but it was greatly appreciated in sand, and on rocky terrain. But unlike tyres with super thin sidewalls, they weren’t light either, at about 720grams.įor a 2.1″ tyre, the had a similar volume to the Maxxis 2.2″ tyres that I typically run. Unlike some super thin tyres, the sealant wasn’t bubbling out the sidewalls. What has stood out is how well the tyres hold air for a non-tubeless ready tyre. They were used in clay, on rock, in sand, loamy dirt, gravel, and of course on the road too. In fact, I used the tyres in four different races. And although the first time I used them was during a mountain bike race around Mt Stromlo in the ACT, my fears of flatting and having to wrestle with the tyres was unfounded. And after months of use, I experienced no burping. They were pretty tough to get on the Stans Crest rims – although it is worth remembering that the Crests are designed to hold non-tubeless tyres securely to be run tubeless. My initial impressions of the Michelin tyres were heavily based on the setup. So while I am always happy to try something else, any other tyre is always going to need to come up well against the tyres I usually run – the Maxxis IKON Exo, 29 x 2.2″. And although I have used a wide variety of fast rolling treads over the past 15 years, the past 18 months have seen me settle on one tread pattern and tyre volume as my ‘go to’ tyre. Earlier this year I received a set of Michelin Wild Race’R tyres to fit up and review. ![]() With the addition of Braking Point it’s also arguably the boldest F1 game so far. What We Said About F1 2021į1 2021 is the best-looking and most customisable instalment of the long-running Codemasters series to date, and the ability to tinker under the hood of the core career experience and play co-op with a friend is very welcome. The drifting is surprisingly unspectacular, though a severe lack of smoke leaves it feeling oddly sterile. ![]() Through no fault of anyone, the supercars themselves are comparatively soggy when measured up to the purpose-built open-wheelers that represent the pinnacle of current F1 engineering, but they do convey a decent enough sense of speed, grip, and weight when compared to their contemporaries in rival racers. They’re an interesting novelty – very different from anything present in previous F1 games – but in practice they do become a bit one-note and I eventually found myself opting to skip them. Taking some broad inspiration from the Pirelli Hot Laps programme that runs at real grands prix – where F1 drivers are conscripted to hurl expensive exotics around the tracks with various VIPs aboard – F1 22 includes high-end supercars from Ferrari, AMG, Aston Martin, and McLaren for both hot-lapping, and a selection of bespoke driving challenges. The addition of collectable supercars feels a little closer to the kinds of extravagant toys real-life F1 drivers can afford, and there is at least a gameplay component attached to these. In theory I understand the desire to capture a taste of that lucrative, off-track luxury that real-life F1 superstars get to enjoy – and, yes, I did get momentarily distracted by the V6 coffee table – but I don’t know if adding interior decorating and the ability to dress your driver avatar like an aspiring Puma activewear influencer was the perfect way to do that. I watched my eight-year-old duke it out with the adaptive AI and while I can’t quite observe the full difference between the two available levels of it, it did seem to keep him in the hunt without making the AI rollover entirely. This should make for more exciting racing regardless of skill. A new adaptive AI mode joins the standard and already huge list of driver aids and accessibility options, and seems to keep the pack within striking distance of less-experienced racers. The new race engineer voice and the ability to switch out commentator David Croft for Alex Jacques similarly help set F1 22 apart from the previous F1 games, which have been feeling increasingly recycled in this department. Visually it’s treading water this year but small touches, like neat new post-race clips of the battle-worn cars and updated camera angles on the old podium celebrations, slightly rejuvenate parts of the Codemasters F1 series that have been stagnant for many years. Rest assured, there is more to F1 22 than simply a stable of the latest cars and the new Miami circuit. ![]() Unchanged from 2021, the 2022 Kawasaki Ninja ZX -14R supersport will continue its reign as “King of the Quarter Mile”.
